Since I first arrived, we've been talking about May and the pool finally being open. Seeing as I have a little experience teaching the kiddos to swim, the parents wanted me to try with the Kid. Today was the first day the pool was open and we headed down the street after lunch. It was decently busy and the weather was perfect pool weather. They heat the pool, but it was warmer than necessary. Being May, I was expecting a slight chill, but it was like June in Texas.
I worked with the Kid a little but I mainly just let him play. No sense ruining his first trip of the season. There were a couple of his little friends there as well and when we'd been there for awhile, I got out and watched from the side. Parents are almost always more lax than babysitters I find. So when there seemed to be a slight issue in the water between the two boys, I was the only one who seemed concerned. They were both using the same small ball as a floating device. It couldn't hold all the weight and even though they could both usually stay afloat and were less than a foot from the wall, all of their focus was getting this ball. The other moms were closer but much less concerned. I jumped in and pulled the boys to the side. It wasn't a big deal, but it was a bigger deal than anyone else seemed to think. The Kid didn't seem fazed after 5 minutes on the side and we headed home. Next time I think we'll work on floating.
